WillAid – “A good solicitor will write your Will”

What is WillAid?

November is WillAid month, during which participating solicitors – including Nelsons, naturally, will write basic Wills for no fee – instead, clients are asked to make a donation to WillAid. There are 9 leading charities involved in WillAid: ActionAid, Age UK, British Red Cross, Christian Aid, NSPCC, Save the Children, SCIAF, Sightsavers and Trocaire, and the donations are shared between them.

Donation amounts

The suggested donations are £85 for a single (basic) Will, £125 for a pair of basic mirror Wills (for husband and wife, for instance) and £40 for a simple codicil amending an existing Will. Participants can, of course, give more if they want, but at these levels the amounts are less than solicitors would normally charge – and there is no VAT added.

Using WillAid is, therefore, a triple win: you get a Will done, you pay a lower amount and you benefit charity – what’s not to like?

WillAid procedure

In order to use WillAid:

  1. contact us on 01580 767100 to make an appointment before the end of November: you will probably see Jasmine Jirbandey, who is our assistant solicitor
  2. write down a list of your assets and the people to be mentioned in your Will – you can use the will planner that is available at the WillAid website
  3. come to the appointment with your notes
  4. we will draft your Will and post the draft to you for approval. If you want changes, let us know. Otherwise …
  5. contact us to make an appointment to sign your Will
  6. make your donation at the WillAid website
  7. bring your proof of donation to the signing appointment
  8. If your Will is more complicated than a basic one, we will have to charge for the extra work, but we will be gentle, I promise

And, by the way …

… we can, of course, also help you with other legal advice and help: Lasting Powers of Attorney, joint ownership of property, property issues, etc
